Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about BuildAFilm — for writers, producers, financiers, and everyone in between.

General

BuildAFilm is a professional verification and deal-facilitation platform for the film and entertainment industry. We verify who you are, what you've done, and whether your project is ready — so that writers, producers, directors, actors, and financiers can find and trust each other without months of cold outreach.

BuildAFilm is built for every party in a film deal — writers and directors who want their work seen, producers who need to know who they're dealing with, and financiers who need proof before writing a check. If you work in film and need to establish trust quickly, BuildAFilm is for you.

Yes — completely free. Creating a profile, browsing, submitting verification requests, messaging, listing projects, and making or receiving offers are all free, with no limits and no paid plans.

IMDb and LinkedIn are self-reported. Anyone can list any credit or claim any title. BuildAFilm actually verifies your identity, guild membership, proof of funds, chain of title, and more through third-party confirmation — so every signal on your profile is real and trusted.

A verified badge on BuildAFilm means that specific credential has been reviewed and confirmed by a third-party source or by the BuildAFilm admin team. It is not self-reported. Each verification type (identity, guild, funds, etc.) is treated separately and displayed on your profile individually.

Writers & Directors

Once you sign up and create your profile, you can list your project — including your logline, lookbook, screenplay, and trailer. Producers and financiers browsing the Financing page can see your project only once you've completed key verifications, which signals your project is production-ready.

Your project becomes visible to producers and financiers once you've completed Identity Verification and Chain of Title — that's the actual bar. A Credits/Portfolio/Industry Credential review — a guild letter, agent/manager letter, festival selection, produced credit, or film school certificate, whichever applies to you — is an optional trust badge you can add on top, but it's not required to be seen.

Chain of Title is the documented history of ownership rights for your project — proving you have the legal right to sell, option, or produce it. Without it, no serious producer or financier will move forward. BuildAFilm helps you submit and confirm this documentation upfront.

Yes. When you list a project you can upload your manuscript/screenplay, a lookbook, and a trailer. These are visible to verified producers and financiers on the platform so they can evaluate your project before reaching out.

You'll receive a notification and can view the offer details including their message, deal type, and verified profile. You can then respond, open a message thread, and move the conversation forward — all within BuildAFilm.

No. Guild membership usually requires the kind of deal this platform exists to help you land in the first place, so it was never meant to be a gate — it's one optional verification type, not a requirement to create a profile or list a project. Non-guild writers and directors get seen the same way everyone else does: identity and chain of title. If you're not in a guild, you can still add a credibility badge through a portfolio or professional-credential review instead.

Producers

Every verification badge on a profile has been confirmed — not self-reported. Identity is verified through Stripe Identity (government ID + biometric check). Guild membership, when present, is confirmed through official records, and portfolio/professional-credential submissions are reviewed by the BuildAFilm admin team. You can see exactly which verifications a writer has completed before engaging.

The Financing page on BuildAFilm filters projects by readiness. Only projects that have cleared identity and chain-of-title verification appear there — guild status, if a writer has it, shows as an additional badge but isn't required. You can also filter by genre, deal type, and budget range.

Yes. On any project detail page you can express funding interest or make a formal offer. The offer goes directly to the writer's profile and opens a message thread so you can negotiate and communicate without leaving BuildAFilm.

Absolutely. Producers can verify their identity, proof of funds, completion bond eligibility, and professional credentials — giving writers and financiers the same confidence in you that you get in them.

Financiers & Banks

BuildAFilm's readiness ladder requires projects to clear identity and chain-of-title verification before appearing in the financing feed. This means by the time a project reaches you, the foundational diligence is already done — ownership is confirmed, the creator is verified, and the project has been reviewed. Guild status, when present, is shown too, but it's an added trust signal rather than a requirement.

Proof of Funds verification confirms that a party — whether a producer or co-financier — has the financial capacity they claim. This is submitted as documentation and reviewed by the BuildAFilm admin team. It gives you confidence that co-investors are legitimate before entering into any agreement.

A completion bond is a financial guarantee that a film will be completed on time and on budget. Completion Bond verification on BuildAFilm confirms that a project has secured or is eligible for this coverage — a key signal of production seriousness and risk management.

No — and we're upfront about that. BuildAFilm significantly accelerates and streamlines due diligence by confirming key credentials upfront, but it does not replace your legal, financial, or contractual review process. Think of it as the trust layer that gets everyone to the table faster.

Yes. The Financing page lets you filter by genre, deal type (option, co-production, equity investment, etc.), and budget range — so you can focus on the exact kinds of projects that match your investment criteria.

No. Expressing funding interest, viewing complete project details (screenplays, lookbooks), and seeing full verification breakdowns are all free, with no limits.
